  15. <p>     SUSPENDED. Daryl Gates, 64, embattled Los Angeles police
  16. chief; for 60 days with pay; in Los Angeles; by the city's police
  17. commission. Gates, who has headed the department for 13 years,
  18. has become the focus of controversy over the videotaped beating
  19. of black motorist Rodney King by nightstick-wielding white
  20. policemen last month. His suspension came two days after Mayor
  21. Tom Bradley called on Gates to resign. "I feel that I have been
  22. disgraced and defamed," says Gates, who plans to fight the
  23. suspension in court.
